Rekha Brar began her career working for a real estate development company in Vancouver, B.C., however her true passion has been designing jewelry. As we approach Valentine’s Day, you will see why Blossom Jewelry Box is the perfect gift.
FWM: You had worked at a real estate development in Vancouver, B.C., as an Accountant. How did this lead you to design jewelry?
I’ve always been fascinated with jewelry. I admired my grandmother’s jewelry box from a young age and wore Eastern-inspired jewels to school. Jewelry sparked my interest during family trips to India. India is such a vibrant country with a rich culture. I admired how women wore their jewelry and how much it tied into their personality. Accessories played an intricate role in their identity. I was mesmerized by the artisans as I walked through the bazaars. Watching how artisans crafted pieces by hand left a lasting impression on me. I worked as an accountant for two years and knew that sitting in a cubicle crunching numbers was not my ultimate calling. As a child, I watched my immigrant parents come to Canada and work hard to obtain success. Blossom Box Jewelry started as a hobby business but quickly blossomed into a full-time career. It all happened pretty quickly and with an unusual ease, I took that as a good sign!
FWM: Have you always been creative?
Yes! I have always been interested in the creative side of things. Creativity has always intrigued me more than the practical aspects of business.
FWM: Tell us about the Blossom Box Jewelry.
Blossom Box Jewelry is a woman of color owned jewelry brand with the ethos of being bold, being different and being daring. All of our pieces are carefully designed in NYC and handcrafted by artisans in India. It’s important for our brand to be able to give back in many aspects, so being able to provide jobs for women in India is vital.
FMW: Your mantra is Be bold. Be daring. Be different. How does this translate into your work?
While we always strive to stay up-to-date and trendy, we always keep our motto in mind — bold, different and daring. When designing, it’s imperative for me to make pieces that are unlike anything else in the market. We want our BB (Blossom Box) girl to feel like she can stand out in a crowd.
FWM: What is your inspiration for your designs?
I’m such a strong believer that every Blossom Box piece should tell a story. I’m inspired by many things all at once, women being on the top of that list!
