FWM: When did you begin your career?
When I was 12 years old my parents took us for a holiday on a cruise ship. They had a talent night on the final evening they called it a Gala Evening. Anyone interested in performing had to audition for the Captain and I decided to without my parents’ knowledge. My parents and brother were mortified when they found out that I was going to perform that evening. However, I received a standing ovation and was asked to sing an encore.
There was an Agent on board who approached my parents the next morning saying he was very interested in my talent, but my parents thought I was too young and they were not interested. However, I knew then that is what I wanted to do with my life. When I was of age I started performing in nightclubs and went on the road with my band and we traveled throughout Canada and the United States performing. That is where it all began.
FWM: As a singer, what did you do with that talent?
After spending a few years on the road my agent suggested I work Vegas as the opening act for some major headliners. I enjoyed working one club, but being on the road and working for a week here and there can really take its toll. I recorded an album but I am not a songwriter, so it was very difficult trying to promote myself while singing other people’s songs. In retrospect, I should have collaborated with a songwriter but as fate would have it I was approached once again by a modeling scout and that took my career in a different direction.
FWM: Share your modeling career with us.
I had never thought about modeling as a career but I enjoyed it immensely. It was great wearing some of the most spectacular gowns from some of the most talented designers in the business. A few years later I was hired as a bathing suit and lingerie model. Being featured in various high-end fashion magazines also opened doors for me. My Agent was contacted by a producer who was interested in me for a small part in a film.
FWM: What do you enjoy about acting?
Acting turned out to be something that once again was never a career I had envisioned for myself. Once I got the acting bug, however, I realized I wanted to continue in the industry. With a few small parts in television and film and working on a Soap, I quickly decided to study acting and was lucky enough to be accepted by the prestigious Lee Strasberg Actors Studio in New York. I felt blessed that not only did I learn so much there but I met so many well-known actors in the industry who were so generous with their advice.
FWM: Are you a Creative?
As an Actor, absolutely. I also enjoy interior design and have helped many friends with their homes. Fashion design is another one of my favorite pastimes as I design my own gowns. I have also worked behind the scenes in the business from set decoration to script editing which many aren’t aware of. Additionally, I have added producer to my list of credits as well as scouting new talent which is an ongoing role.
FWM: Tell us about FameTube.
A company in the United Kingdom started FameTube. They asked me to be Judge and Mentor for Canada and the United States. We are always on the lookout for raw talent. I love paying it forward and giving them a platform to showcase their talent.
Many of my friends in the industry are well-known producers, casting agents, directors, etc. and FameTube is the perfect platform for upcoming talent to be seen and heard.
FameTube is also a great promotional platform that both the U.K. Team and myself promote seasoned talent on there as well. Again, it is a great opportunity for Casting Agents or Producers who may just be in search of talent.
FWM: Why are you a Formidable Woman?
Working in the entertainment industry in the era of the ME TWO movement was challenging alone. Pushing ahead and not letting it deter you can only make you stronger. I have always been tenacious and love taking risks and will never let anyone or anything stop me from living my life the way I want to.
I took time off from the industry and worked with the Police and that made me stronger and more motivated. I spent five years teaching self-defense to new recruits and it actually was one of the best times of my life. I learned that I was capable of anything I put my mind to.
Even today there is nothing I won’t try. For me, age is a number and I will continue to do all the daredevil stunts that I have always done whether it be parachuting, white water rafting or being thrown by a wild horse. The trick is to get back on and be fearless.
FWM: What advice would you give women today?
Believe in yourself. Make the most of your life. It is amazing how much you can do if you truly believe you can. Get started – small steps. You will be amazed at just how strong you truly are. So many people fail because they are too afraid to even try. What have you got to lose? Start slow, don’t put too much pressure on yourself but once again believe you can and you WILL.
