WOMEN IN POWER–HOSPITALITY
Felicia Jackson, professionally known as the “Queen of Hospitality” is THE force to be reckoned with in event planning. Be it an intimate gathering of 100 or so guests or a gala for thousands, Ms. Jackson has you covered. She has an enduring passion for bringing your dreams to life through your affair. Let’s find out the journey behind the “Queen.”
FWM: Felicia, so glad you could be a part of this issue. Introduce yourself and your business.
FJ: As a woman, I have held, and still hold, many titles: Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend…and although it is true that I am all of these, more importantly, in my career, I am a leader in the hospitality industry and rank highly among hoteliers in sales and events. I have been in the hospitality industry for 20 years. My career started as a Facilities and Events Manager with the Episcopal Diocese and led to a Sr. Events Manager for arenas and convention centers before crossing over to hotels serving as Director of Catering Sales and Events and now Director of Sales and Marketing. Independently, I serve as a consultant for several individuals and companies, with their event needs– lending insight, guidance and helpful tips to make their events a success.
FWM: Why did you start a career in event planning?
FJ: The start of my career in events came by happenstance. As the facility manager for a church for the Episcopal Diocese, the position became more of detailing the events of the various ministries in the 1000-person congregation. In taking care of all of the parishioners needs, it made me very passionate about the ‘ins and outs” in planning an event, and how I want to make it a career.
FWM: What made you want to get involved in the Hospitality Industry?
FJ: Passion. Passion is the driving force behind all of my successful catering, sales and marketing experience. The hospitality industry is an opportunity to meet so many people, and to plan amazing events. I am passionate about not only making the sale with the client, but then helping to plan and execute the event. Seeing the smile on the client’s face gives so much gratification when the event is a success.
FWM: What is your superpower?
FJ: My superpower… versatility. I have the ability to work with any client, in any situation, with literally, any type of event. From a Bar or Bat Mitzvah of 100 guests, to a gala for one of the nation’s largest non-profit organizations, to a sold-out arena with a top artist. My abilities to work with all types of people in all types of circumstances, are remarkable. More importantly, this superpower leads to situations outside of the office. There are so many people that I come in contact with on a regular basis, not just clients but colleagues and others who want to truly develop their skill set in the industry. I am able to relate and inspire all walks of life, and give them the tools they need to successfully make their mark in the hospitality industry as well as other industries where their passion lies.
