FWM: Who is Lindsay and what is your superpower?

I am a mother, wife and educator. I am a teacher with the Durham District School Board and I have recently started my own organization, The Movement Project, aimed at keeping dancing beyond their high school years. My superpower is creating community within my Dance programming, My students feel a sense of belonging, that they are a part of something bigger than themselves, and together we create incredible work that is known for its excellence, and quality.

FWM: What has been the greatest challenge in your industry and how have you overcome it?

As a dance educator, I believe that the greatest challenge in this industry is for dance to be seen and understood for the value it provides. Dance professionals are often misunderstood and undervalued. Dance education is not necessarily about turning kids into professional dancers. It is about collaboration, developing life skills such as communication, dedication, responsibilty and committing to something bigger than yourself. Students learn how to express themselves, present in front of others, and discover joy in movement that will influence and benefit them for a lifetime.

FWM: You’re a serious BOSS! Tell us, what are you working on and what’s next for you?

I have started an organization called “The Movement Project” which is designed to connect, educate and inspire people through movement, specifically dance and yoga. The Movement Project is a place where teens and adults can continue to discover the joy of dance long after their high school and post secondary years because far too often, dance opportunities are severely limited post graduation. In addition, The Movement Project aims to educate and inspire other dance educators on best practices, injury prevention, curriculum development and programming, all aimed improve the dance community in the Durham region and beyond.
