FWM: So, who is Cre Riggins? Introduce yourself.
I am a 32 year old military spouse and mother of two. Originally from Biloxi, MS but reside in Winston-Salem, NC. I am currently a stay at home parent turning my love for writing music into a full-time career and I am branding the stage name “Goddess Cre”.
…fall in love with your process and be ready to adapt.
FWM: How did you come to love music?
I first fell in love with music around age 6. My mother would have her friends or my aunts over and I would sing for everyone. I loved how happy my voice made them feel as they would cheer me on and tell me to keep practicing. As a kid, that made me feel important and it made me as if I stood out.
FWM: In what ways does music inspire?
Music has a way of controlling all of your senses. It has a way of creating a mental space of tranquility. There’s so many different sounds and when they come together, it has a way of making you feel free and ready for celebration. When lyrics are added, it allows you to relate to other people and be inspired by their words. Music reminds us that, we are not alone. Someone, somewhere has had similar experiences and it inspires a connection with all things in life.
FWM: What makes you a formidable woman?
I’m a very passionate, honest, and genuine person. I try to keep everything I say and do from the heart first. Sometimes that hinders me because often people are either afraid of the truth or take advantage of my kindness. However, it never stops me from being me. I know exactly who I am and I know exactly what I want. Once I have my mind wrapped around what I have to do to get where I need to be, then I become unstoppable.
Overcoming cancer is what sealed my fate into music. I had to take a huge pause from 2012-2018 on doing music to get better and on top of trying to juggle my own growing family.
FWM: Give some advice to women looking to break into the music industry.
First, you have to learn how to keep your emotions under control and be open to constructive criticism. You have to go into it knowing that everyone isn’t going to like your music, like your vibe, like your style. But for every no, someone is willing to say yes. Trust your process, get comfortable, and fall in love with your process and be ready to adapt. Music is constantly changing and you have to find a way to be in tune with that and at the same time remain true to who you are as an artist.
FWM: What challenges have you had to overcome in your journey?
Overcoming cancer is what sealed my fate into music. I had to take a huge pause from 2012-2018 on doing music to get better and on top of trying to juggle my own growing family. Although, I gained my Music Business degree, it’s still very different being in the field versus learning how to be in the field. I’ve lost money that I’ve invested with different producers and graphic designers. I’ve been scammed by people pretending to be record label reps. There’s a huge lack of support from family and people whom I thought were closest to me. It’s been a serious roller coaster ride for sure but as long as there’s still breath in my body, I’m going to continue to do what I love. I’m no longer bound by people trying to convince me to do otherwise.
FWM: What’s next for Cre Riggins? And how can our FWM audience connect with you?
